THE TROT DERBY IS READY FOR NEW LEGENDS

02/10/2024

On 13 October 2024, the 96th edition of the Trotting Derby, one of the most fascinating races on the Italian horse-racing scene and the 13th stage of the Palio delle Regioni promoted by Masaf, will be held at the Ippodromo di Capannelle. It is the most important race for 3-year-old trotting horses and is held every year in the Capital. Its birth dates back to 1926 with the intention of creating a high-level competition and giving horse owners and trainers a dream. Until 2012 it was run at the Hippodrome of Tor d Valle and previously at Villa Glori. The first horse to win was Malacoda, and since then the event has been held annually, with some interruptions during the Second World War. In the 1950s and 1960s, Italian trotting was a growing success, a true golden age, with increasingly qualified participants and a large audience. Thanks to Tornese, a champion beloved by the public, the prestige and fame of Italian trotters increased considerably. He was a horse with a proud character and great physical power that soon led him to establish himself as one of the best trotters of his generation. His rivalry with another champion of the long reins ‘Crevalcore’ was epic. The rivalry between them was one of the most famous and followed by fans. Real factions were born. On the one hand cheering for Tornese with his decisive character, he was often seen as the folk hero, and on the other Crevalcore who represented the more technical and methodical opponent. Dueling has always fascinated sporting competitions. The Trotting Derby is run over a distance of 2,100 metres, with a start behind the autostart. The best 3-year-old horses participate, selected through a series of preliminary heats, from which the fastest horses qualify. Many winners have subsequently become international champions, strengthening the reputation of Italian breeding. In recent times, Varenne has been the horse that has most represented us at world level. He won the Derby in 1998, marking the beginning of his rise and the key moment of his career, because that victory gave him the status of Champion of Italy and marked the starting point of a series of successes that would make him a living trotting legend.

Appointment then to 13 October at the Capannelle Racecourse and may the best win, but above all, who will make 13?
