Veterinarian
Passion and sensitivity, in-depth scientific training together with a good ability to grasp the signs of discomfort in the horse. These are the main qualities that the veterinarian must possess, a reference professional for anyone who breeds, trains and takes care of horses. Despite its imposing appearance, the horse is a very delicate animal, subject to many diseases and limb problems.
The most frequent problems of sport horses concern limb injuries. The veterinarian, who also has knowledge of equine podiatry, is able to establish the right treatment and also plan physiotherapy and rehabilitation interventions. To do this it often also requires the collaboration of the farrier, the trainer and the rider or craftsman. Furthermore, the horse, being a monogastric herbivore, due to the length of its intestine, is frequently one of the animals most subject to colic, which is sometimes even fatal. Even in this case, the intervention of the veterinarian is essential and decisive.
Not only treatment, but also prevention and prophylaxis. In fact, life in stables exposes horses to contracting numerous infectious and respiratory diseases and the veterinarian takes care of vaccinating the animals in order to avoid these inconveniences.
The veterinary activity is not limited only to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. His professionalism allows him to operate in the various realities linked to the world of horses, from those that use animals in equestrian racing to those connected to the breeding and marketing of equines.
He verifies the suitability of feed and the hygiene of the premises in livestock farms; monitors the state of health of the horses before and after carrying out competitive activity; in the sale of animals, as a consultant, he ensures the buyer that the horse's characteristics correspond to those agreed upon during the negotiation phase.
Among the other roles of equine veterinary surgeon, we remember that of the veterinary gynecologist, who works mainly in insemination centers and stud stations, the veterinary nutritionist and the veterinary podiatrist.
